Please, Don’t Insole Me
By Victor Roth

Insoles are removable linings that come in your shoes. Most manufacturers use a simple, inexpensive type of sock liner. Some of the more expensive shoes feature higher quality inserts. An over-the-counter (OTC) insert may be used to enhance the properties or function of a new shoe or revive a shoe that has been used awhile.  The Running Spot has a number of inserts that may meet your needs.

If you are looking to get more shock absorption out of your shoes, you might want to try a cushioned type insole. These types of insoles will add to the cushioning of their shoes, but will provide no additional support for the foot. These inserts are designed simply to provide extra padding to the shoes, not correct any biomechanical issues. We carry several of these insoles from Spenco, Sorbethane and New Balance.

If you are having any type of pain in the foot, heel or arch you may want to try a functional insole. These are more firm and supportive than the cushioned inserts mentioned above. They will limit foot motion and provide additional arch support for a lower arched or pronated foot. This type of insert is generally more rigid than the one included in the shoe and therefore sometimes has a minimal break in period. In addition to the brands mentioned above, we carry a functional insert from PowerStep, made by a local podiatrist.

These inserts can be beneficial in both your running and everyday shoes, especially if you are having any type of foot related injury or pain. Most shoes come with removable inserts that you replace with one of the insoles mentioned above.  These products are also made in several different lengths to better fit in different types of shoes.

The staff at the Running Spot/New Balance stores is knowledgeable in helping you select the proper insole for your situation. We encourage you to try several different insoles to ensure proper fit. This is an excellent way to compare features and feel of the various insoles. If you have any questions or would like to test out a pair of insoles, please stop by the Running Spot/New Balance stores and let us assist you.
